October is Let's Talk Month

Published: October 1, 2013

Every October is national Let’s Talk Month. For those who don’t know, that means this month is when parents are encouraged to talk to their kids about sex.

As an organization focused on preventing teen pregnancy and STDs in Knox County, Let’s Talk Month is obviously a cause that is very near and dear to our hearts. We always encourage parents to talk to their children about sex, but this month we will be pushing this message even more. Why? Because we believe the best way to prevent teen pregnancy and STDs is by talking to your kids about sex.

This isn’t an easy or comfortable talk to have, but if you think about it, which is worse—having a possibly awkward conversation with your kid or your daughter getting pregnant, your son getting someone else pregnant or your child getting an STD? Since we recognize this talk isn’t a fun one to have, our website includes tips for talking to your kids about sex, as well as other resources for parents of teens.

This October, we encourage you to talk to your kids about sex and help us prevent teen pregnancy and STDs in Knox County. We do what we can through public service announcements, advertisements and education, but the biggest thing that can help us is having you, the parents, talk to your kids about sex. So help us by doing your part to participate in Let’s Talk Month.

Get Vaccinated

Protect yourself by getting vaccinated. The HPV Vaccine is cancer prevention. Ask your doctor about what you can do to stay safe, or call 865-215-5000 to schedule a vaccination appointment at the Health Department.
